The Naish La Torche Pro presented by O'Neill opened in spectacular style this weekend, as 48 Trialists from as close as France to as far away as Hawaii and Australia battled it out for their place in the Main event. As the rounds progressed, a few clear leaders stood out from the early rounds including Kody Kerbox from Hawaii (son of Stand Up World Tour Judge and surfing legend Buzzy Kerbox), Greg Closier from Brittany, Kieran Taylor from Australia and Casper Steinfath from Denmark. And it was to be these four that made it all the way through to the Finals, with Kody Kerbox taking the honors with a consistently high level of performance surfing. With eleven U16's registered for the Na Kama Kai Youth Challenge coming from as close as Brittany to as far away as Hawaii, the scene was set for a fiercely fought out elimination that would provide the top 2 placed athletes with a place in the main event. From the outset, it was clear that Benoit Carpentier from right here in Brittany was the man to beat, but the level across all the kids was phenomenal as they are stepped up to the Challenge and for the chance to face up against the Big Players on the World Tour. In the end, Benoit Carpentier would take the win, with Ridge Lenny, the 14 year old brother of current World Champion Kai Lenny following closely in 2nd place to advance through to the Main Event.

WIth the Trials and the Na Kama Kai Youth Challenge now complete, the Main Event will begin tomorrow morning, with a forecast for good waves and favorable winds. First up will be current World Champion Kai Lenny, joined by his brother Ridge in an unprecedented brothers match up - with Kai as number one seed, and Ridge as 32nd (as the second advancing from the Na Kama Kai Youth Challenge), they will now face each other in the first heat of the Main event at stop number 2 of the 2011 Stand Up World Tour.

The SUP Tribe shop located in Anglet offers you the chance to discover Stand Up Paddle. Whether you already know this native sport from Hawaii or want to discover it, Lili and Benji will take you out to a great water spot adapted to your level, for 2 hours of pleasure and rides on a lake, a river or on the ocean.

Lili tells us a little more about the rides they offer:

“The 2 hour rides include boards, paddles, transport to the water spot as well as tips and advice to start Stand Up Paddle (how to gain stability on your board, how to row, to do U turns and of course what to do if you loose stability J) They cost 35€ per person.

They usually take place on a calm water spot such as the Lac Marin of Hossegor, Capbreton, La Nive and in calm weather conditions. Depending on the group level you can also get a ride in the bay of Saint Jean De Luz or Hendaye (south of Biarritz)

We organize the trips on demand, usually on Sundays and only occasionally during the week .

We limit the group to 6 riders maximum, with a group of 3 minimum. Nevertheless, individual rides can be considered if we go out on La Nive.

We use the Enbata School boards; very easy to operate, very stable and secure for beginners. You can fall on them without hurting yourself because of the special foam they are made from. These boards can be handled by children without any worries.”

But we are not a Stand Up Paddle School!

We provide a few tips so that you can enjoy and handle your board and make your ride pleasant. What we offer is an accompanied ride. This means that we ask our clients to sign a discharge engaging their own responsibility. Without this form signed we will not proceed with the ride.

A Stand Up Paddle school is in the pipe line for next year, but it is still in the project stage and something pretty different from the accompanied rides we do at the moment.

We are hoping to see a lot of new Stand Up Paddlers in the coming weeks. Here in the Pays Basque the season isn’t over yet and the rides are still fantastic at this time of the year.”

Danny Ching wins Tahoe race

Enbata headed up to Kings Beach, Lake Tahoe for the Tahoe Nalu last weekend…

It was an awesome event for all competitors. Team Rider Danny Ching won the elite race on his new 404 race board and the Danny Ching Riviera paddle.

He then came back Sunday to win the 10 mile race on his OC 1, and lead Team Riviera to a 3rd place finish in the relay.

It wasn’t all racing though everyone got to demo all the new Riviera Boards and surf the small wind swell coming in at Kings Beach.

Fanny ORONOS, 24 years old, is part of our team, here, at Enbata Biarritz. A wonderful ambassador of the stand up paddle, is one of the terms that come to mind when you watch and get to know Fanny.

Originally from Bask Counrtry, she spent her very young years learning to surf in St Jean de Luz bay, before moving to follow her Master degree in Management and Ingeniering of Boardsports. On a present, she has made surf training her passion, and she is focused in the Xabi JOURDES Quiksilver surf/SUP school in St Jean de Luz.

Nils Inne / Artist and designer of the Stand Up World Tour trophy

Nils Inne, 24 years old, who lives in Biarritz, is not the most typical artist you may expect!

Being a professional skater, he has been skating on every continent since more than 10 years in order to stimulate his great passions! One of which is painting. Nils started paint 3 years ago presenting his own vision of the world!

Nils has been working on his own colours and has started to present these since a year.

These most expressive and colourful paintings are recognizable at the very first glance since he has developed his own individual graphic signature.

Much to our delight and pleasure, Inne didn't hesitate to take up the challenge, winning the trophy at the first European Stand Up World tour.

Stand Up World Tour Europe - Anglet 8/16 May 2010

We are proud to announce that the Stand Up World Tour will be coming to the coastal town of Anglet in South West France, from May 8th - 16th. To be held at Chambre d'Amour, the second event on the Stand Up World Tour will witness the world's best arriving in Europe, to meet the very best that Europe has to offer in a spectacular showdown. Until this point, a great deal is known about the talent coming from Hawaii, Tahiti, California and Australia, but the lesser known, but equally as dangerous 'dark horses' to emerge from all over Europe at this event are bound to cause some surprises of epic proportions.

Already, one of France's representatives, Peyo Lizarazu from the Basque country finished 4th in the Sunset Beach Pro, clearly staking his claim in the title race as the Tour moves on to his home breaks and then to the all powerful left of Tahiti. Also to watch out for will be longboard champion Antoine Delpero, established waterman Rico Leroy and big wave rider Stephane Iralour.

4 Wildcards will be awarded to local athletes deserving of a spot in the main event based on the Committee's vote: leading the Committee for this decision is Peyo Lizarazu, who knows more than anyone, the wealth of talent emerging from Europe. In addition, there will be a trials component to the event, allowing people to work there way up and into the main event. CATCH

The beginning of the stroke when the blade first enters the water

-Be sure to drive the blade deep into the water before pulling

-Extend out to a comfortable reach but don’t try to over reach

POWER PHASE

The driving of the board forward past the submerged paddle blade

• Be sure to think about driving yourself past the paddle blade not pulling the blade through the water

• Use your upper body and shoulder rotation for power and use your arms as just extensions from the shoulders. Your body is much more powerful than your arms.

• Try to keep your top hand over your bottom hand during the pull to allow more strokes per side.

• The paddle is most efficient when it is vertical or has positive angle like at the beginning of the stroke.

• The power phase should finish at your feet (while standing) or at your hip while seated.

• Pulling back too far will only cause more deceleration between strokes

EXIT

The end of the stroke when the blade is released from the water

• Take your paddle out at your feet, don’t pull beyond your feet as this will allow you to start your next stroke sooner and the board / boat will not decelerate as much between strokes

• Be sure to exit by dropping your top hand downward and not by lifting the lower hand up. This is a more relaxing way to exit and will also help get the blade out of the water clean and fast.

RECOVERY

The return of the blade back to the start of the stroke

• Point your thumb forward on the recovery to allow the blade to “feather” on the return. This will allow the blade to be in the most aerodynamic position on the recovery. This is particularly important when paddling into the wind.

• Relax your shoulders on the recovery to give your body a relaxed feeling in between strokes

• Don’t rush the recovery as a nice smooth recovery will aid in the next stroke being more powerful.

The Waterman concept is a philosophy of life adopted centuries ago by Hawaiian seamen. This philosophy is about the relationship between man and ocean. To do that, watermen made it their objective to be the best in all sports disciplines that involve the ocean: swimming, ocean outraging, stand up paddling, surfing and diving. Watermen wanted to provide the best performance as a sign of respect to the environment.

This concept, originally very exclusive, started to become widely popular three years ago and helps to explain the revitalization of the ancestral practice of Stand Up Paddle Surfing.

When Laird Hamilton, a legendary Waterman, came to France in April 2005, he brought with him a large board and a paddle. After presentating his material and following many demonstrations, experienced surfers became attracted to the idea of Stand Up Paddle, with novice surfers and others quickly joined the movement. It’s at this time that Stand Up Paddle Surf arrived in France and the idea of Enbata was born.

Advantages? The Stand Up Paddle allows individuals to surf differently, but also permits riding on a flat lake, without waves, and in other ways. The accessibility and the easiness of Stand Up Paddle Surfing is attractive to sportsman, non-sportsman, men, women, and children. The only constraint: have water next to you!

QuickBlade products are the natural evolution of paddle performance founded on years of competitive racing by Jim Terrell. Jim's paddling career began in southwest Ohio on the Little Miami River near his hometown of Milford.

Not everybody who decides to try standup paddling decides to try the exact same type of standup paddling.

In standup paddling, the old saying “Different strokes for different folks” is certainly true. It makes sense, then, that there are different types of standup surf paddles, and Quick Blade makes three.

The Kanaha standup paddle is named after the famous Kanaha surf break on Maui. The Kanaha standup paddle gives you an extremely efficient and durable blade.

It features a slight dihedral on both sides of the all-carbon blade, which improves stability along the longitudinal axis during the power phase, meaning you don’t have to fight to keep the blade from twisting as you paddle. The Kanaha blade also incorporates an ABS plastic edge for improved impact strength.

The most prestigious professional surfing contest in the world, The Pipeline Masters, has been named the Gerry Lopez Pipeline Masters for decades in recognition and respect of Gerry’s experience and skill with this legendary wave.

Lopez founded Lightning Bolt Surfboards in 1972. These were some of the highest performance short boards of the era and ridden by some of the best surfers in the world, on their travels to Hawaii for the pounding Winter surf.

I'm originally from Marseille, and so my surfing debut took place there. My mom and my dad were both into windsurfing... When I was born, my father started getting into surfing and so he taught me at a very young age...but since it's hard to find surf regularly in the Mediterranean, I had to compensate my lack of surf with skateboarding... and I really liked that. I was able to reach a high level of surfing thanks to my dad's motivation, the different trips I made with my family (especially those to the Basque coast) and the training I received afterwards through the Pôle France… These days I live on the Basque coast with my younger brother and I'm stoked to be here...

Ron House supported Kyle from the early SUP hours. This fireman leaves in San Clemente and is a « San O » local. Kyle was one of the first long distance and surf rider. Waterman by definition, Kyle is living thru and for ocean since he was born. A carrier to watch closely…
